The Bakewell Blanket

Hi everyone :) We have a new pattern to share with you - YAY :D

Lots of you will have seen this blanket in various stages of progress on Instgram or Facebook... but here we are, the final thing ready for you all to use. It's so exciting! The pattern is free, and you're very welcome to pass it on to anyone you think might enjoy it too. A massive thank you must go to all the lovely people who have tested the pattern and given invaluable feedback - thank you so much!

Now, having said this is the "final thing", if you have any problems when you're using the pattern, we would love to have your feedback, and if we see a common theme occurring in where people are getting stuck we will update the pattern.

This pattern came to life when we ordered some Scheepjes whirls (Laurelin of 'Snufflebean Yarn' is our go-to for whirls), and I couldn't find a pattern I really wanted to make... and if you've bought any whirls or other beautiful gradient yarn you'll know that it's sooo pretty you have to find something special to use it for, otherwise you decide it's best to keep it just to gaze at! So after faffing around for a bit, this happened:

And after some very kind feedback I started using this pattern with the Lavenderlicious whirl :) I didn't find it the easiest yarn to start with... if you're using it for the first time and you feel like throwing it out of the window, I get you! But keep going, I absolutely love the yarn now (I'm already plotting which one to buy next).

This is the first ever Bakewell Blanket in all it's lovely purple glory:

And once that was done, I immediately started on the next! This time with a Strawberries & Scream whirl:

Haven't quite finished this one yet, but it goes with me into central London most days and make an appearance on the District Line commute!!

As you can hopefully see from the first two pics, this pattern works just as well in a solid colour, and will work well in any weight of yarn - just follow the manufacturer's guide for which size hook to use and you're good to go :)

We really hope you will enjoy using this pattern - it's definitely been fun creating it!

Jen & Chlo

  4. Hi thank you for thos pattern it is lovely. The only problem I had was at the start of the repeats. I had to work out where I was on the repeat in each row. Once I had done this I was fine. I have made a chart which made it easier for me as I am a visual person. If you would like me to send you it just let me know and I will email it 🙂

I am so confused but someone relieved I was not the only one having a hard time figuring it out... can anyone email me an explanation or chart? Is there further instructions posted somewhere? I looked but could not find any additions

  5. What a beautiful pattern-and I really want to make it! I may just be missing it, but I don't see anything that tells how much yarn this blanket takes. I'm in the U.S. and would need to figure out what yarn and how many skeins needed. Thank you for this awesome pattern and in advance for your help!

    1. Hello, this pattern works with pretty much any type of yarn, I have used DK with a 4mm hook or sport weight with a 3.5mm hook, but just choose whatever hook the band on the yarn recommends x

    1. Hi Lynda, it’s up to you really - the pattern works with any type of yarn and you can use whatever size hook is recommended on the yarn band. I have previously used 1 Scheepjes whirl with a 3.5 hook (makes a 75cm ish blanket) or 4 balls of DK with a 4mm hook, which made a slightly larger blanket. X

  18. This pattern was not written very well at all. Row 9 is extremely confusing. It says to follow row 5 but how can you when the numbers are off. I don’t get it.

    1. After many attempts I realised it row 4 I needed not 5!! Don't know if that helps? The pattern did carry on by using row 4..but then I missed a bobble stitch so I've undone it lol! But try with row 4 see if that works for you xx

      Delete
  19. Im.stuck on the same point the repeat of row 5 but as I'm counting I think you may need a repeat of row 4? For the bobble? I'm going to try that and see if it works! Xx

  20. I need further help with this pattern... the bobble doesn’t look like a bobble and it’s not adding up with the stitches...

  21. Lovely design. Like so many lovely designs it is square. I prefer oblong. Is there a way to convert your square pattern to oblong and keep the flow of colors?

    1. The pattern is linked at the bottom of the blog post, and as you say it's also on Ravelry. There's a slightly different version on Ravelry too, which has the increases in the corner rather than in the middle of an edge.
